With the college football season hitting the home stretch, it’s time to separate the pretenders from the contenders for college football’s highest prize; the BCS National Championship. There are four teams that have separated themselves from the pack with perfect records up to this point, but the end of the season has proven to be a crazy whirlwind time and time again that can trip up the best teams late. If the unbeaten teams at the top start to trip up, look for the Auburn Tigers to make a move as a national title contender.

Just one season removed from a winless SEC season in 2012, Auburn is now 10-1 and No. 6 in the latest BCS rankings. They are the second rated one-loss team in the country at this point with just the Iron Bowl left on their schedule against the No. 1 Alabama Crimson Tide. Winning that game would eliminate one of the unbeaten teams in their way to getting to the national title game and punch their ticket to the SEC title game against another top-10 team in either the Missouri Tigers (No. 8) or South Carolina Gamecocks (No. 11).

An SEC championship would give Auburn as impressive a resume as anyone in the country over the final three weeks of the season. It would be impossible to deny them as the top one-loss team in the country at that point and if there were just one undefeated team at season’s end, there’s a strong case to be made for Auburn as a legitimate contender in the BCS National Championship conversation.

Can the Tigers complete the biggest turnaround in history and go from the cellar of the SEC to the national title game?
