Kent State Golden Flashes: Defense Rises To Occasion In Upset vs. Ohio Bobcats

Kent St.

Ken Blaze-USA TODAY Sports

A year removed from their division title and MAC Championship berth, the Kent State Golden Flashes have suffered disappointment after disappointment. The team was 3-8 overall and the transition to new head coach Paul Haynes’ system has not been a smooth one. The team has struggled to find answers on both sides of the ball and had lost five of their last six games entering Tuesday night.

However, the Golden Flashes were able to rally behind their stingy defense in pulling off the road upset (44-13) and ended their 2013 campaign with a victory against the Ohio Bobcats.

Kent State was able to shut down the Bobcats’ rushing attack and force Ohio quarterback Tyler Tettleton into beating them down the field. The defensive line forced double-teams which allowed the linebackers to fill the gaps and put the Bobcats into third-and-long situations. Kent State held Ohio to three first-half punts as the Golden Flashes were able to open up the 17-13 halftime lead.

Kent State made great halftime adjustments and clamped down on the Bobcats’ offensive schemes. The Golden Flashes dominated in dictating the tempo of the second half and shut down Ohio by holding them to 34 total yards in the third and fourth quarters. The Golden Flashes gave up 60 total rushing yards for the game and held Ohio to two yards per carry on the ground.

The Golden Flashes’ secondary did an excellent job in keeping the Bobcats receivers in front of them and forcing Tettleton into throwing short to intermediate routes. Tettleton finished with 11-of-24 passing for 132 yards with one touchdown and one interception. Kent State held the Bobcats to two third down conversions on 12 attempts (16.6 percent), and held the Bobcats to 204 total yards for the game.

Kent State finished their 2013 season with a two-game winning streak and finished at 4-8 overall (3-5 within MAC play). Ohio finished at 6-5 and 3-4 in the conference.
