Dana Holgorsen Should Be on the Hot Seat for West Virginia Mountaineers
After suffering a massive collapse in the second half of 2012, Dana Holgorsen had some serious questions to answer about the West Virginia Mountaineers this season. To make matters more difficult, he had to do it without his three leading offensive playmakers from last season. While he expressed confidence that the players stepping in would be able to get the job done, Holgorsen has failed to get a consistent effort from his team this season. After their latest loss to the Kansas Jayhawks, Holgorsen should start to worry about his job security.
Kansas came into last week’s game on a 27-game losing streak against Big 12 opponents. But the Jayhawks rose up and looked strong against West Virginia, winning 31-19 leading to a celebration in Lawrence that included students storming the field, players dancing in the locker rooms and a goal post getting torn down and reportedly deposited into a nearby lake. It was just the latest game in which the Mountaineers failed to show up this season leading to up and down production from week to week that has contributed greatly to WVU dropping five of their last six games to become ineligible for the bowl season.
What this season has shown is that Holgorsen was completely dependent on the roster that he inherited for his early success with the Mountaineers. Many of the players that the Mountaineers have relied on this season were transfers from other schools, there isn’t much to look forward to in terms of future stars currently recruited to the roster and the defense remains a train-wreck for the most part. This team has regressed since Holgorsen took over and there doesn’t appear to be a quick-fix available to get things turned around.
The question for West Virginia now becomes whether or not Dana Holgorsen has a plan for this program and if that plan is a viable solution to get this team back on the right track. If he doesn’t then the Mountaineers need to move on from Holgorsen as their head coach.
