It was “cupcake week” for most of the SEC on Saturday which saw the Alabama Crimson Tide taking on FCS Chattanooga in what amounted to little more than a scrimmage for the No. 1 team in the country. Their lack-luster competition, however, did nothing to hurt Alabama in the latest BCS standings as they continue to roll towards their third-straight BCS National Championship. Next up for the Tide is a tough Iron Bowl matchup with the Auburn Tigers.
Auburn has been the biggest turnaround of the 2013 season as arguably the best one-loss team in the country this season after going winless in the SEC last season. The Tigers are in a position to play spoiler for their in-state rivals with a heavy dose of implications in this season’s Iron Bowl. The winner of this game will represent the SEC West in the SEC title game and have the inside track to the conference’s automatic bid to the BCS.
Beyond that, Alabama needs to remain perfect if they hope to defend their national title this season. With the Florida State Seminoles and Ohio State Buckeyes chomping at the bit right behind the Tide in the BCS standings with identically perfect records, one misstep will be enough to likely push the Tide out of the title conversation. A win over Alabama may also be just enough to push Auburn into the conversation for a late push into the title game (particularly if FSU or Ohio State falters).
The Iron Bowl is always an exciting game on the field but this season the game carries even more wait as Alabama puts their national title hopes on the line against an upstart Auburn squad that has been rebuilt overnight. Who comes out on top and assumes control of the SEC?
