With an unbeaten record and just one game left on the schedule, the 10-0 Fresno State Bulldogs are looking to achieve a perfect season and make a bid at a BCS bowl. With one of the best quarterbacks in the nation behind center and an electric offense, this team has what it takes to make some noise in the BCS.
On the other side of the field, the San Jose State Spartans are fighting to become bowl eligible after beginning the season 5-3 and losing three straight games. It’s been a tough season for the Spartans and it looks like they might miss out on a bowl after a successful season just one year ago when they were 11-2.
Fresno State, like I stated earlier, has one of the best quarterbacks in the nation as well as one of the best offenses out there. Derek Carr has been more than impressive this season and if it weren’t for his lack of solid competition in the Mountain West Conference, he’d surely be a Heisman candidate. He leads the second-ranked passing offense in the nation with 3,943 yards and 39 touchdowns on the season, hitting his favorite target Davante Adams 100 times for 1,213 yards and 19 touchdowns.
San Jose State has a talented quarterback of its own in senior David Fales. He’s on pace to come close to his stellar numbers from a season ago, but his interception numbers have boosted with 13 on the season compared to nine in all of 2009. Fales has passed for 3,642 yards and 27 touchdowns on the season for the ninth-ranked passing offense in the nation. Chandler Jones has been his favorite target with 71 catches for 1,210 yards and 12 touchdowns on the year. The Spartans rank 94th in the nation in rush yards per game.
Defensively, the Bulldogs rank 68th in the nation in points allowed per game, not nearly as impressive as the offense has been. Fresno State also ranks 61st in yards allowed with just over 400. San Jose State ranks 100th in points allowed as well as 105th in yards allowed per game with over 450 — this could be a shootout.
Fresno State will travel to San Jose State to take on the Spartans at 3:30 p.m. EST on Friday, Nov. 29. The game will be broadcasted on the CBS Sports Network.
PREDICTION: San Jose State 30, Fresno State 43
