Alabama’s Loss to Auburn Ruins BCS National Championship Hopes, Likely Ends SEC Streak

John David Mercer-USA TODAY Sports

Entering Saturday, the Alabama Crimson Tide were at the pinnacle of college football glory. Nick Saban and his team had been there and done that countless times. This game against Auburn, sure, was blown up to be a big game — and it was. But, to the Tide, it was another chance to prove why they were number one in the country.

Last year, the Tide crushed Auburn 49-0. This season, however, the Tigers would prove to be a much tougher battle for Saban and company.

On the final play of the game, Alabama was going to attempt a 57-yard field goal to win the game with the score tied 28 apiece. After  Adam Griffith’s kick fell short, Chris Davis caught the ball in the end zone and ran it back 109 yards for a touchdown, sealing the victory for Auburn, 34-28.

In absolutely shocking fashion, the Tide’s hopes of another BCS National Championship bid were shattered. Not only were Alabama’s hopes shattered, but a 7-year streak for the SEC is in great danger of ending. Over the last seven years, the National Championship Game has included a team from the SEC. With Alabama’s loss, that will probably come to an end.

The National Championship Game will likely be between Ohio State and Florida State at this point. Getting Auburn into the title game over the Buckeyes will be tough, and even a win over Missouri in the SEC Championship might not do it. Ohio State has not only gone undefeated this year, but they have not lost a game in two years. Florida State could wind up being the new number one, and oh by the way, they boast — arguably — the Heisman Trophy favorite Jameis Winston.

We’re not quite sure exactly how things will shake out in the BCS, but what I can assure is that the Tide will not be in the running for a title, and there’s a good chance that the SEC will be left out altogether.
