Penn State QB Christian Hackenberg Shows Bright Signs for Future
The Penn State Nittany Lions defeated the No. 15 Wisconsin Badgers, 31 – 24 in a game that saw the Nittany Lions pull off their biggest upset since defeating the Michigan Wolverines, 43 – 40 in overtime. A huge part of Penn State’s win was the play of freshman quarterback, Christian Hackenberg.
Hackenberg threw for 339 yards, four touchdowns and zero interceptions. These stats bring his touchdown total to 20 for the year, as well as his total passing yards to over 2900. Remember, he’s just a freshman.
Hackenberg has slowly become better as the season has gone along. He’s thrown only two interceptions in his last five games to seven touchdowns. If his continuously improving skill at the quarterback position throughout the season is any indication of how his career is going to be for Penn State, the Nittany Lions are in good hands for the future.
This is good news for Penn State, because the Big 10 has been consistently getting better over the past few years. No one would have expected for the Michigan State Spartans to have arguably the best defense in the nation, Michigan to finish next to last in the Big 10 Legends division or even for eight Big 10 teams to be bowl eligible. The Ohio State Buckeyes are really the only Big 10 team that did as they were expected to do this season.
Penn State is at a crucial point for its future success as a member of a Big 10 conference that grows in talent every year. The Big 10 may look like it belongs to Ohio State for the next few years due to Urban Meyer’s presence, but don’t sleep on Penn State. With a young quarterback like Hackenberg at the helm, the Nittany Lions have a very bright future.
