Big Win and Help Necessary for Auburn Tigers

The Auburn Tigers are still the talk of college football after Saturday’s stunning victory over the Alabama Crimson Tide in the Iron Bowl. While Auburn is getting plenty of love from the media, what they really need is some help from the voters in both the USA Today Poll and the Harris Poll.

If Saturday’s games play out as expected, both the Florida State Seminoles and the Ohio State Buckeyes would remain unbeaten and in line to play in the BCS National Championship Game. Auburn is unlikely to pass either of those teams in the computer rankings, no matter how they do on Saturday against the Missouri Tigers in the Southeastern Conference Championship Game.

Outside of an upset, the best case scenario for Auburn would be to dominate Missouri and hope that Ohio State struggles against the Michigan State Spartans. If voters are able to see Auburn thump a top five opponent, then see Ohio State put out a less than impressive performance against Michigan State, some of them might be willing to place the Tigers in front of the Buckeyes in the final rankings.

Auburn will hang its hat on beating two top five opponents in the final two weeks of the season, and then see where they end up in the final rankings. Gus Malzahn and his team would benefit from some media exposure on Saturday evening to state their case, touting their strength of schedule against a tough SEC slate, as well as victories over those two highly-ranked opponents.

Barring an upset, it appears to be a long shot that Auburn will make the BCS Championship Game. But with the way luck has been on Auburn’s side lately, anything is possible.
