Why Ohio State Deserves No. 2 BCS Ranking
There has been much debate this weekend about who would be No. 2 in this week’s BCS standings.
Many SEC proponents argue that one-loss Auburn should have jumped the undefeated Buckeyes in the BCS because of their weak Big Ten schedule and struggles against Michigan. Auburn beat the No. 1 team in the nation, which is impressive, but it is not good enough reason for them to jump an undefeated team in the BCS.
Just because you beat the No. 1 team does not mean you deserve to play in the National Championship game. There are other things that need to be taken into account.
First of all, Ohio State played Michigan on Saturday in Ann Arbor. Michigan is their biggest rival and many would argue that in a rivalry game that big, the records can just be thrown out the window. The same could be said about Auburn and Alabama in the Iron Bowl. Both teams have ruined each other’s seasons many times and this year was nothing new.
Michigan played Ohio State tough, hoping to ruin their perfect season and shock the world. They came up short of course, but the fact that Ohio State struggled against their biggest rival on the road and still came out with the win does not mean they do not deserve to be No. 2. It does not mean a one-loss team should jump them in the BCS.
Like it or not, Ohio State is a very good team with one of the best and most explosive offenses in the country. They currently hold a 24-game winning streak and have gone undefeated the past two seasons, having yet to lose a game in the Urban Meyer era. The Buckeyes are looking to extend that streak with a win over the Michigan State Spartans this Saturday in the Big Ten Championship game.
The Spartans are currently No. 10 in the BCS and are the strongest opponent the Buckeyes have played all season. A win over such a strong opponent would seal a trip to the BCS National Championship for the Buckeyes and ruin Auburn’s hopes of jumping them even if they beat the Missouri Tigers in the SEC Championship game.
The SEC’s national title streak is likely to end this season. The only hope they may have is a loss by Ohio State, the No. 1 Florida State Seminoles, or both. It will be nice to see someone else in the National Championship for once.
