10 College Football Teams on Upset Alert During Bowl Season
10 Teams Likely to be Upset in College Football Bowl Season
It’s finally here! Well, sort of. The college football bowl season is underway as all 35 games have been announced and scheduled. However, we still have two weeks before the first postseason game is actually played and almost a month until the Florida State Seminoles square off against the Auburn Tigers in the 2014 BCS National Championship Game. But at least this year we’ll have a title game worth watching, thanks to Auburn’s upset of Alabama and victory over Missouri in the SEC Championship Game. But like Alabama, many teams could be upset by lower-ranked (and in some cases, inferior) teams this bowl season.
Florida State and Alabama would have been a title game matchup for the ages, but Auburn is a lot better than for what most folks are giving the Tigers credit. That means we could have an upset — and a lot of upset people when the SEC wins its eight consecutive national title.
But that’s not nearly the only game that features a top-25 team on upset alert. There are several, but we’ve narrowed it down to the top 10. So if you like underdogs and upsets, we’ve got you covered this college football bowl season. If you’re in need of some help making your bowl game picks, allow us to give you some insight on how to make a difference in your office pool. Here are the top 10 teams on upset alert this college football bowl season.
Without Aaron Murray, the Bulldogs are in trouble. They’re facing a Nebraska team that has averaged over 200 rushing yards per game this year and everyone knows Georgia has had its problems on defense all season. Don’t be surprised to see the Cornhuskers win the Gator Bowl.
9. Texas A&M
Don’t let Duke’s big loss to Florida State fool you — the Blue Devils will give the forgotten Aggies everything they want and then some. Let’s just say Johnny Manziel’s last game for Texas A&M in the Chick-Fil-A Bowl won’t be pleasant.
8. South Carolina
The Gamecocks are riding high after an emotional victory over Clemson, but that momentum won’t carryover into the Capital One Bowl. Expect Wisconsin to hit South Carolina in the mouth Big Ten-style and do even more damage to Jadeveon Clowney’s NFL Draft stock.
7. Michigan State
The Spartans are arguably the hottest team in the nation right now, especially after upsetting Ohio State in the Big Ten Championship Game. However, Michigan State should watch out for a taste of its own medicine in the Rose Bowl because Stanford likes to steamroll teams with its physical play and the Cardinal really shouldn’t be an underdog in this one.
The Tigers put up a ton of points against Auburn in the SEC title game, but expect Oklahoma State to clamp down on that offense in a bounceback game from the Cowboys’ disappointing loss to OU. The Cotton Bowl will be a classic won by the team from the Big 12.
5. Fresno State
The Bulldogs had a really easy schedule this year and showed their true colors in a loss to San Jose State. Needless to say, the Trojans of USC will be a lot tougher than those Spartans, so expect Derek Carr’s last game for Fresno State in the Las Vegas Bowl to be disappointing.
Like Fresno State, Louisville hasn’t played anyone this year and the Hurricanes are extremely underrated. Watch out for Stephen Morris and company to end Teddy Bridgewater’s collegiate career on a sour note in the Russell Athletic Bowl.
Without Zach Mettenberger, the Tigers are in trouble. Everyone is about to see just how valuable LSU’s signal-caller really is when an underrated Iowa squad upsets the LSU powerhouse in the Outback Bowl.
2. Ohio State
The most overrated team in the country is about to lose its second consecutive game to a ranked team. Clemson is way better than it looked in a loss to South Carolina and the Tigers are angry. There’s no way Tajh Boyd is going to end his career with a loss to a weak team like the Buckeyes.
1. Florida State
Florida State is a titan of a college football team and will likely win the national championship this year, but the Seminoles can’t overlook Auburn. The Tigers’ rushing attack could keep Jameis Winston off the field and if that happens, the BCS will be sent away with an eight straight title by an SEC team. Don’t say we didn’t warn you.
