It has been quite the surprising season for the Buffalo Bulls in 2013 seeing as they had just four wins a year ago. Buffalo has posted an 8-4 record on the season thus far and they have also finished in second place in the MAC East division. After losing their first two games of the year, the Bulls then won their next seven games to become bowl eligible.
On the other side of the field, the San Diego State Aztecs have finished the season with a little worse of a record than they would have hoped to accumulate, posting just seven wins while having nine a season ago. San Diego State got off to a slow start by losing their first three games of the year and then winning seven of the next nine.
Buffalo is known more for its defense, but the offense ranks in the middle of the nation in most major categories. The passing offense ranks 67th in the nation behind sophomore quarterback Joe Licata who has passed for 2,628 yards and 21 touchdowns on the season while hitting Alex Nuetz, his favorite target, 58 times for 947 yards and 11 touchdowns. Fred Lee is second on the team in receiving with 54 catches for 644 yards and four scores. Branden Oliver leads the rushing attack with 1,421 yards and 15 touchdowns.
San Diego State has excelled in the pass game this season while struggling a bit in the run game. The passing offense ranks 35th in passing yards per game behind the arm of Quinn Kaehler who has passed for 2,796 yards and 17 touchdowns. Wide out Ezell Ruffin leads all receivers with 63 catches for 1,061 yards and three scores while Colin Lockett has 49 catches for 696 yards and five touchdowns. Adam Muema leads the run game with 1,015 yards and 12 touchdowns.
Defensively, Buffalo has been much better than it has on offense. The Bulls rank 27th in the nation in points allowed per game as well as 31st in total yards allowed per game. San Diego State has not been nearly as impressive, ranking 97th in points allowed per game as well as 41st in yards allowed per game.
Buffalo and San Diego State will face off in the 2013 Famous Idaho Potato Bowl in Boise, Idaho, at 5:30 p.m. EST on Friday, Dec. 21. The game will be broadcasted on ESPN.
PREDICTION: Buffalo 28, San Diego State 21
