Explosiveness Gives Mike Evans Good Chance at Biletnikoff Award
On Thursday night, many of college football’s highest individual honors will be handed out at the Home Depot College Football Awards. One of the most hotly contended awards this season has been the Biletnikoff Award handed out to the nation’s top wide receiver. There were countless worthy candidates across the country but Mike Evans of the Texas A&M Aggies separated himself to become a finalist tonight. It was his ability to make explosive plays happen that got him into the top three and gives him a shot at taking home the Biletnikoff Award tonight.
Evans finished the 2013 season with 65 catches for 1,322 yards and 12 touchdowns. His 110.2 yards per game average rank No. 8 in the country despite catching just 5.4 passes per game on average. He did the most with the catches he made, averaging a strong 20.34 yards per reception, the highest among all wide receivers with at least 1,000-yards receiving and the No. 10 highest average among all pass-catchers. He was a home-run threat every time he got his hands on the ball which made him a valuable asset for Johnny Manziel this season.
He will have some tough competition for the Bednarik, however. Brandin Cooks led the nation in yards (1670), and yards per game (139.2) and ranked second in college football in receptions (120), receptions per game (10), and touchdowns (15). He burst onto the scene early and never let go of the spotlight, leading one of the nation’s top passing attacks in 2013 with the Oregon State Beavers. Sammy Watkins of the Clemson Tigers is the other finalist tonight after catching 85 passes for 1,237 yards and 10 touchdowns this season.
Evans’ penchant for big plays on a consistent basis, however, is what sets him apart in the race for the Biletnikoff Award. While any of the finalists will be worthy winners this season, Mike Evans holds a major edge with his explosive playmaking ability.
