5-Star ILB Raekwon McMillan Rejects Alabama, Commits to Ohio State Buckeyes
Raekwon McMillan (Hinesville, Ga. Liberty County) committed to Ohio State over Alabama today after an in-home visit from Urban Meyer and his top assistants on Sunday evening sealed the deal for the five-star inside linebacker.
“It was just something special about Ohio State University,” McMillan said after donning an Ohio State hat.
The Buckeyes were the favorites for McMillan since he named them his leaders in October of 2012, but Alabama made up significant ground recently, especially after an in-home visit from Nick Saban last week to add suspense to today’s announcement. Clemson and Auburn also had in-home visits with the blue-chip linebacker on Sunday, but Auburn’s efforts were too little too late, and Clemson was unable to bridge the gap between the top two despite a valiant effort.
The five-star inside linebacker already has the look of a college upperclassman at 6-foot-2 and 242 pounds, and has been selected to play in the January 2 Under Armour All-American game. He has the ability to make an early impact in Columbus and be a future All-Big Ten performer in a hurry.
Ohio State will return starting middle linebacker and rising senior Curtis Grant, but could yield some time to McMillan in certain game situations. With the addition of McMillan, Ohio State has commitments from 247Sports’ top inside linebacker and the top outside linebacker in Dante Booker (Akron, Ohio. St. Vincent-St. Mary).
This duo will join last year’s No. 2 inside linebacker commit Trey Johnson, who is now playing weakside linebacker behind Ryan Shazier, and four-star linebacker Mike Mitchell. If Shazier bypasses the NFL draft (slim chance) the Bucks will have quality depth at linebacker, which is something they lacked in 2013.
McMillan had 159 tackles in his final high school season with 35 coming for a loss and added 8.5 sacks, an interception and three forced fumbles.
