C.J. Hampton (Meridian, Miss. Meridian) has been committed to Ole Miss since June 5, 2012, but the writing has been on the wall for the past few months that the four-star safety will flip to Alabama. The four-star safety will announce his final plans this week and it’s expected he will flip to the Crimson Tide.
Hampton has maintained his commitment to the in-state Rebels was firm all the while taking repeated trips to Tuscaloosa, including this past weekend after competing in the AL-MS All-Star Classic on Saturday afternoon. Since August, Hampton has visited Alabama on at least five occasions, including three times after his official visit to Ole Miss on Oct. 12.
The 6-foot-1, 195-pound safety with 4.4 speed is close friends with Alabama commits Cameron Robinson and Laurence “Hootie” Jones and Hampton said they are recruiting him harder than anyone else. The blue-chip safety has also developed a close relationship with Nick Saban who coaches the defensive backs at Alabama.
“He knows DB’s and knows what it takes to play there,” Hampton tells BamaOnLine. “He’s fired up about me as a player, but is just as fired up about me as a person. We’ve talked for hours every time we talk. Every time we get on the phone, it seems like we talk forever.”
The most important thing for Hampton as he nears his decision according to the BOL staff, “The people that are going to be there, that are going to look out for you, that care about you and care about your family. Those are the most important things with me.”
Surely he will find that at both Ole Miss and Alabama. But he’ll have to ask himself if the great people and environment at the in-state school can compare to competing for national titles and being tutored by Saban who has produced a number of NFL high draft picks.
Hampton hasn’t set the specific date for his decision just that it will be this week, and he said he’ll be scheduling a press conference for his big announcement. Who questions a press conference to announce they’ll be attending the school they’re already committed to?
This is why I’m predicting Hampton flips on his long commitment to Ole Miss in favor of Alabama.
