Middle Tennessee State Blue Raiders Fall to Navy in Armed Forces Bowl

Tim Heitman-USA TODAY Sports

The Middle Tennessee State Blue Raiders finished the 2013 college football season 8-5 after falling to the Navy Midshipmen in the Bell Helicopter Armed Forces Bowl.

Despite an impressive first season in Conference USA, MTSU just couldn’t get anything going offensively. They looked extremely impressive at the beginning of the game defensively, but interceptions thrown by Logan Kilgore sealed the deal for MTSU. Navy is known for their elite running game, and the Midshipmen didn’t disappoint. Navy threw for just 19 total yards but ran for 366 to win 24 to 6.

Although the Blue Raiders will be disappointed at their loss, Middle Tennessee will be happy to have finished with a winning record in their first season in C-USA. Not many expected them to come in from the Sun Belt and have immediate success, but they did. The Blue Raiders won their last five games before the loss to Navy with the beginning win coming against the C-USA East Champion Marshall Thundering Herd who finished conference play 7-1.

It’s disappointing after so much success this year for Middle Tennessee to lose a bowl game that they underperformed in, but just being able to consistently go to bowl games is important for a team looking to build towards the future. If they can continue to recruit well the future will be very bright for the Blue Raiders. Expect Middle Tennessee State to continue to get better and compete for a Conference USA championship within the next few years.
