Jeremy Hill Makes Possible Finale Memorable for LSU Tigers in Outback Bowl

The LSU Tigers came into the 2013 postseason with a heavy burden on their backs after losing their last two bowl games in disappointing fashion. Their mission in the Outback Bowl against the Iowa Hawkeyes was to avoid extending that losing streak to three games. It wasn’t pretty or dominant, but LSU escaped with a 21-14 win on New Years Day thanks to the huge effort of running back Jeremy Hill.

In what could end up being his final game at LSU, Hill stepped up in a major way and led the Tigers to the win. He finished the game with 216 yards rushing on 28 carries and two touchdowns, including a 37-yard run to cap a late drive that put LSU up 21-7 in the fourth quarter. He was instrumental in icing the game for the Tigers on their final scoring drive, accounting for 87 yards on four carries during a six-play, 92-yard drive that ultimately decided the game.

His effort was made all the more important with the struggles of Anthony Jennings under center. The freshman quarterback got his first start in place of the injured Zach Mettenberger and made plenty of freshman mistakes as he completed just 7-of-19 passes for 82 yards with an interception. He struggled to hit open receivers and never found his rhythm with the receivers as he took four sacks on the day. Jennings appeared visibly flustered by the Iowa pressure and would have likely been unable to deliver much of anything if the game had come down to him having to make a play.

Luckily for him, Hill was there to save the day. The junior finishes the season with 1,401 yards and 16 touchdowns and will make his decision about whether or not to return to school in the coming weeks. If he is done at LSU, Hill gave the Tigers a huge send-off as he put the team on his back to get them back into the winner’s circle this bowl season.
