Nebraska Cornhuskers' Charlton Warren Needs Major Revamp In Recruiting Style

Charlton Warren‘s inbox was already being filled before pen was put to paper on his contract. The Nebraska Cornhuskers‘ new secondary coach already has a massive amount on his plate, and one of the team’s most immediate needs is going to require an overhaul of what he’s been exposed to over the course of his coaching career.

When recruiting for Air Force, Warren and his colleagues were looking for a particular type of player. The likelihood of the Falcons getting anywhere near a top-tier bowl on a regular basis was (and is) nil.

Head coaches Fisher DeBerry and Troy Calhoun needed players who could execute an offense chock-full of triple option plays. An ideal season included winning the Commander-in-Chief’s Trophy by beating Army and Navy before taking home a mid-level bowl trophy.

That offense also helps tell the tale of why Warren has to shift gears. Due to the size of cadets with military aspirations (or lack thereof), the misdirection of the triple option works wonders. As you might imagine, the defense suffered the same fate as the size of Warren’s charges were no match for the likes of Notre Dame, Fresno State and even Utah State.

The Falcons came close to knocking off Michigan in Warren’s first year as defensive coordinator, but for Nebraska to excel, that win needs to be frequent when the two teams clash in conference play. What might give some Huskers fans immediate hope of Warren reeling in a few bigger fishes to Lincoln is that not only is he a Georgia native, but 14 members of the Peach State dotted the Air Force football roster for the 2013 season.

Nebraska fans have a perfect opportunity to see if the Huskers’ newest coach can work some magic. It’s only 12 days until Signing Day, and there’s plenty of room left in the 2014 class.
