Could Penn State Nittany Lions Land 5-Star OT Damian Prince?

In his short time with the Penn State Nittany Lions, head coach James Franklin has made a fantastic first impression on the fan base, alumni — and most importantly — the recruits. When Franklin took over the helm at Penn State, the 2014 class had 18 players committed. With the scholarship limits, the Nittany Lions can only give out 23 scholarships for the 2014 class, so that left him with five available scholarships. In the recent weeks since hiring Franklin, three of previous head coach Bill O’Brien’s commits have decommitted, taking the number down to just 15 commitments. Franklin has also added six of his own now, taking the class to 21 players.

On Saturday night, Franklin landed four-star athlete Koa Farmer from California. Farmer had previously been committed to the University of California. Penn State is also rumored to be expecting a commitment from a three-star safety from Florida, Amani Oruwariye before the weekend is over. Giving scholarships to Farmer and Oruwariye would take the class to its max of 23 scholarships.

Even with a full class, Penn State still could add another recruit if the circumstances are right. If he chooses to, Franklin could take away a scholarship from a player already committed to the Nittany Lions, although that is unlikely. A recruit could also choose to gray-shirt. It’s a tough concept to explain, but the biggest detail is that the player would enroll late and count towards the 2015 class.

The circumstances would be right if five-star offensive lineman Damian Prince chooses to enroll at Penn State. Prince is a player worth doing whatever it takes to land. The Nittany Lions have somehow sneaked their way into Prince’s top three, along with the Maryland Terrapins and the Florida Gators. If Franklin and his staff are able to impress Prince enough during his official visit, it is very possible that he could commit to the Nittany Lions.
