Texas A&M Aggies Should Retire Johnny Manziel’s Number
The impact that Johnny Manziel had on the Texas A&M Aggies, the A&M athletic department and the school itself is hard to measure.
Think about this: just over two years ago, A&M was in transition, preparing to move to the mighty Southeastern Conference. The Aggies’ football program had a new coach (Kevin Sumlin), was in a new conference (the SEC) and was breaking in a new quarterback (Manziel). The fear in College Station was that this very important transition could crumble, resulting in the Aggies being near the bottom of their new league.
Of course, that did not happen. Manziel was an overnight sensation, Sumlin was lauded for his efforts and the Aggies were extremely competitive in the SEC, even beating the top-ranked Alabama Crimson Tide.
Manziel went on to win the Heisman Trophy, becoming the first freshman to ever win college football’s highest individual award. He would return for his sophomore season and would put up even bigger numbers, although he was not able to repeat as the Heisman winner.
Now, Manziel has decided to enter the NFL Draft (he was eligible because he was a redshirt sophomore). But his legacy in College Station will live on. And that’s why the university should retire Manziel’s jersey number. To honor Johnny Football and all that he did for the Aggie program, no Aggie should ever wear jersey number 2 again.
It may seem premature to do this now. However, if another player is allowed to wear number 2 this fall, there’s no going back. That’s why the powers that be in the athletic department, along with Sumlin, must make sure that number 2 is taken off the list of jersey numbers available.
Manziel did his best to help the A&M program in a time of transition. As Manziel makes his own transition, the Aggies should afford him this honor.
