One of the biggest surprises of National Signing Day 2014 yesterday was outside linebacker Rashaan Evans picking Alabama over Auburn. He was considered to be such a strong lock for the Tigers that the team’s official website had his profile, including a bio and welcome video, posted the morning of Signing Day.
Don’t jump to conclusions, Auburn.
To give you an idea of the general feeling surrounding fans and experts, the 247Sports Crystal Ball showed 95 percent of voters giving the edge to Auburn while Alabama and Georgia each took two percent of the vote.
There were some audible boos when Evans made the decision to sign with Alabama because he was considered to be the deciding factor in which school gets the upper hand in in-state recruiting.
“I had a lot of second thoughts,” said Evans, who made the decision Tuesday night but didn’t alert either school until the next morning. But he admits he woke up Wednesday morning without complete certainty.
What makes this decision even a little more interesting is that Evans is an Auburn fan. He’s used to siding with the Eagles, being a part of that fanbase. I think this speaks volumes to his critical thinking and discipline when it comes to making the correct decision for him. There are many examples of kids choosing the arch rival of their favorite team growing up, but it’s ultimately about the best fit for the individual, not the history of their fandom.
Having your bio and a welcome video posted on a team’s site you chose not to attend is probably a unique experience. I’m sure nothing will be made of it in the future, but it’s certainly one of the more fascinating stories of Signing Day 2014.
