Michigan State Football: The Malik McDowell Saga May Never End
Not many people realize how much a parent’s opinion can mean to a young adult or child. In the case of five-star DE Malik McDowell, it seems to mean everything — or that’s what his parents are leading the world to believe.
In case you don’t know what the situation is, McDowell committed to the Michigan State Spartans on National Signing Day in front of thousands of family, friends and strangers. His parents had been extremely opposed to the notion of him going to Michigan State based on a visit that the family took to East Lansing, Mich., in which his mother had a poor experience — rumored to have been Malik staying out too late.
Well, after standing up for himself on National Signing Day, McDowell looked to be locked up by the green and white and head coach Mark Dantonio, but that’s not necessarily the case — yet.
His parents, Greg McDowell and Joya Crowe, have voiced their opinion on the matter, but it’s ultimately up to their son who has the talent and who needs to make the decision on his own because this is his career, not theirs. It’s been almost a week since he committed to the Spartans and a signed letter of intent has yet to be faxed in to the Michigan State football office because his mother hadn’t signed it yet.
However, his coach came out later and said that he is sticking with Michigan State and that his father is saying this because he wants his son to attend a different school.
Yes, the saga is far from over, but one thing is for sure — his parents need to stay out of this.
Joya and Greg had a long talk with their son and voiced their opinions up until National Signing Day and Malik stood up and made the decision to go to the school that he wanted to go to — a decision that he knew “for a few weeks” before National Signing Day.
He wanted to attend a school that made him the most comfortable and that’s how he felt with MSU.
It’s about time Malik’s parents start looking out for their son’s happiness and support whatever decision he makes. Shame on you two, Greg and Joya.
Start being parents and stop being dictators.
