Maryland Football: Predicting the 2014 Conference Season

The Maryland Terrapins will step into the Big 10 being a team to keep an eye on. They'll have a tough conference schedule as the Terrapins have to play on the road against Michigan, Penn State and Wisconsin. Maryland hosts Michigan State and Ohio State, but those are two of the toughest teams in the conference. It is very difficult to put numbers to a team that has this kind of schedule, but I think these Terrapins will fare better than most think.

Part of why I think this team can exceed expectations is the fact that four starters on the offensive line return from a season ago. Experienced quarterback C.J. Brown will also be back for the Terrapins. He's had injury problems in the past, but if he can stay healthy for a full season, he becomes a serious weapon for this offense and could play a huge role in this team's success.

On the defensive side of the ball, 10 of 11 bowl game starters will be back. In all, this roster is looking like it will be very experienced, disciplined and talented. Their transition to the Big 10 will likely be a choppy one at first, but this will be a team very capable of putting it together on the run, which is where the Terrapins will find their success.

At Indiana -- Win

This might be a tricky one for Maryland. Indiana's offense, when clicking properly, is one of the best in the Big 10. Coach Kevin Wilson has done a fine job in that department. It's every other facet of the game that sends the Hoosiers to subpar records.

Vs. Ohio State -- Loss

Getting Ohio State in any stadium other than the Horseshoe is a plus, but this is too early in the Terrapins' conference season to see any sort of miraculous win.

Vs. Iowa -- Win

This is going to be an excellent game between two well-coached teams that are difficult to expose. This game will likely be on the heels of a thumping from Ohio State, so expect the Terrapins to be fired up at home for this one.

At Wisconsin -- Loss

Heading all the way to Madison to take on the Badgers will be a daunting task. I'm looking at the physicality of this Wisconsin team, and it's tough to imagine Maryland stealing one on the road in this situation.

At Penn State -- Loss

From Wisconsin to Penn State, this week-to-week transition may prove to be the toughest of the Terrapins' season. As it will have gone with the Badgers a week earlier, Maryland will be extremely hard-pressed to get a win in this kind of road environment.

Vs. Michigan State -- Loss

This Michigan State game has the possibility of being something to keep your eye on. Maryland will be coming off a bye week for this one, so it will have had plenty of time to prep for the Spartans' tenacious defense.

At Michigan -- Loss

This could very well be a trap game for Michigan because one week after this rests "The Game" with Ohio State, but the Wolverines play extremely well at home.

Vs. Rutgers -- Win

This will be an excellent chance for Maryland to boost itself as it (hopefully) preps for a bowl game. Rutgers can't be expected to do much in the Big 10 this season; I'm looking for Maryland to really lay it to the Scarlet Knights to cap off the regular season.
