Is it safe to say Michigan State is the favorite to win the Big 10 Championship twice in as many years? The Spartans return eight starters on offense and five on defense, and the really early polls being released absolutely love this team. Sure, there are a few holes needing filled, but what team isn't dealing with that right now?

Here are five reasons Michigan State is the favorite to win the Big 10.

This will be on college football's radar as soon as summer hits and we start looking forward to some of the rare, spontaneous, wonderful games popping up in non-conference play. Especially if Michigan State can go to Eugene and knock off the Ducks, this could very well be a game that sets an early tone for the rest of the season.

As Michigan State's defense became so spectacular last season, talk surrounded defensive coordinator Pat Narduzzi and his future (or lack thereof) with the Spartans. Surely he would take a head caoching position somewhere, right? Wrong. Narduzzi is back to stir up some more excellence in the Spartans' defense.

Michigan State's conference schedule is very favorable. The only true road test in line for the Spartans is Nov. 19 at Penn State, the last game of the regular season. Getting Nebraska, Michigan and Ohio State in East Lansing will be huge.

2. Stellar Defensive Ends

Michigan State's defensive front as a whole might actually be a bit of a problem this season. But when it comes to the ends, no need to sweat. Shilique Calhoun and Marcus Rush will bring "see you in your nightmares" speed and explosiveness to the opponents' backfields.

Michigan State very well could have been competing for a national title last season, had it not been for a slow start on offense. It took the Spartans a while to find their rhythm. This season will be a different story though, as running back Jeremy Langford and quarterback Connor Cook look to lead a more productive attack. That will be the ultimate game-changer for Michigan State.
