Texas A&M Football: QB Competition Will Continue Into Fall
Texas A&M‘s quarterback race will likely continue into fall practice. Going into the spring, the Aggies had three quarterbacks vying for the starting spot, but after the transfer of Matt Joeckel, the team is left with two options. The two candidates are young, but have the potential to do great things in College Station.
Sophomore Kenny Hill and true freshman Kyle Allen will head into the fall hoping to earn the starting role. Hill has the advantage when it comes to experience. He was the backup to Johnny Manziel, who will likely be a first-round pick in the upcoming NFL Draft. As for Allen, the young quarterback was the top pocket passer in the 2014 recruiting class. He enrolled in January and was thrown into the fire immediately.
At the end of spring practice, Allen was believed to be the leading candidate for the starting spot, but nothing is set in stone. The young quarterback has great pocket awareness and a strong arm. He threw for over 8,000 yards and 86 touchdowns in high school. Allen has all the intangibles you look for in a quarterback. Look for the true freshman to make some noise as the team heads into the summer.
As for Hill, the sophomore saw action in four games during his freshman campaign. In those four games, he completed 16 passes in 22 attempts with one touchdown. The one advantage Hill might have over Allen is the fact that he was able to learn from one of the best college quarterbacks in recent memory.
The summer will be important for the two young quarterbacks. Hill and Allen are expected to lead summer workouts for the Aggies. They will have the opportunity to prove their leadership skills and show coach Kevin Sumlin they have what it takes to lead the Aggies’ offense in 2014. Expect a heated battle that could likely last until the end of fall practices.
