Texas returns four of its top five players in the secondary. This experience will be key as the defense is expected to carry the team, especially early in the season. Here is a look at the players Charlie Strong and Vance Bedford will rely on.

Sheroid Evans played five games in 2013 before tearing his ACL. He missed spring practice, but is expected to be ready for the season opener. Evans brings experience, size and speed. He should line up as the nickel back.

Josh Turner has had an up-and-down career at Texas. Turner has appeared in 37 games for Texas, but has just five starts. He battled a hip injury last season that limited his effectiveness. With Adrian Phillips graduated, the starting job at safety is Turner's to lose.

For years, Texas fans saw a Mykkele Thompson afraid to make a hit. He missed lots of tackles early in his career and lacked that big-play instinct. Now a senior, this is Thompson's last chance to change the perception of him and show why Texas' coaches from the previous regime thought so highly of him as a defender.

Duke Thomas is a talented player. Texas flirted with making him a two-way player last year, lining him up at wide receiver in practice. Ultimately, he stayed on defense. He led the Longhorns in interceptions last season. With Carrington Byndom and Quandre Diggs on the field, opposing quarterbacks regularly looked Thomas' way, and he responded more often than not. Byndom has graduated, leaving Thomas as an important cog in the secondary.

Diggs has had a solid career at Texas. His first year on campus he earned Big 12 Freshman of the Year honors. Teams stayed away from him during his sophomore season. In 2013, he was moved to the nickel slot to help support the run. This year, he is expected to return to being a boundary defender. Diggs showed more leadership during offseason workouts and spring practice. He is poised to have a significant impact in his senior season.
