If it wasn’t already clear to absolutely everyone that Will Muschamp, head coach of the Florida Gators, is on the hot seat, it is now. At Monday’s SEC Media Days, Muschamp used his opening statement by talking for more than 11 minutes about what seemed to be nearly every player on the Florida roster.
In most circumstances, this might be seen as a coach giving a little publicity to some of the lesser-known players on his team, and that would be admirable. But this seemed to be Muschamp talking for nearly all of his allotted time so that no one could ask him a pressing question.
That question is, what do you need to do save your job this season? And when Muschamp finally stopped talking and let a reporter ask the question, he actually had a decent answer. “Control the things you can control,” is what Muschamp said, referring to the fact that he can’t control the chatter around the program. However, he can control what happens between the lines.
Muschamp, despite the rumors about his job, seems confident in his team, despite his blatant attempt to not answer the job security question. He calls this the most complete team that he has had during his time at Florida. And it better be.
After last season’s 4-8 disaster in Gainesville, Muschamp needs for his Gators to have a big season, or this could be his last as the Florida head coach. With a healthy Jeff Driskel back at quarterback, the Gators should be better, but will it be enough to save their embattled coach? That is one question that won’t be answered at Media Days.
