There are some college football coaches who excel through the ranks and establish success in the NFL. This includes Jim Harbaugh, Jimmy Johnson, Pete Carroll, Paul Brown and Tom Coughlin. Here's five college coaches who've never held a coaching position in the NFL, but their success in the college game proves they're ready for the next level.

Mike Gundy has a 77-38 record with the Cowboys in nine seasons as head coach. He's taken the Cowboys to eight-straight bowl game appearances. In 2011, this included a Big 12 Championship and BCS win in the Fiesta Bowl against the Stanford Cardinals. That same year, Gundy received the Bear Bryant and Eddie Robinson awards for best coach.

Gary Pinkel has a 102-63 overall record with the Tigers. Since the 2007 season, he's posted a record of 65-28 along with six bowl game appearances and four division championships in the Big 12 and SEC. Since 2009, seven of his players were drafted in the first round of the NFL Draft. Pinkel still holds the record as the winningest coach in Toledo Rockets football history.

Mark Richt has a 126-45 record in 13 seasons as head coach of the Bulldogs. He's recorded two SEC Championships, six SEC Eastern Division Titles, 13-straight bowl game appearances and six seasons finishing in the top 10 rankings. He was also awarded SEC Coach of The Year in 2002 and 2005.

Bob Stoops has a 160-39 record in 15 seasons with the Sooners, averaging only two losses a season. He's led the Sooners to a national championship win in 2000 and eight Big 12 Championships. Stoops was also named Walter Camp Coach of the Year in 2000 and 2003. Seventy of his players have been drafted into the NFL including Minnesota Vikings RB Adrian Peterson and St. Louis Rams QB Sam Bradford.
