Freddy Canteen Freshman to Watch for Michigan Wolverines in 2014

The Michigan Wolverines are under a lot of pressure to get things turned around on offense in 2014, bringing in a new offensive coordinator in Doug Nussmeier to shake things up this fall. There will be plenty of opportunity in the new offense for fresh faces to make an impact as the Wolverines try to get back on top in the Big Ten this fall. For Michigan to turn things around, freshman Freddy Canteen will be a major factor in 2014.

Michigan will have to overcome the loss of the team’s leading receiver Jeremy Gallon last season without a lot of proven playmakers ready to step in. Tight end Devin Funchess returns as the most reliable target the team has after recording 49 receptions for 748 yards and six touchdowns. This fall, Funchess figures to get moved around a bit more, including lining up out wide, but will need some help in the passing game. There’s a serious void at receiver where a dynamic playmaker could really make a difference.

That’s where Canteen comes in. The true freshman wideout enrolled early at Michigan and made his presence felt during the spring. He put his speed and pass-catching ability, showing a quick mastery of the offense as he hauled in one long touchdown pass and was an under-thrown pass from starting quarterback Devin Gardner away from a second one. He came into the program with a self-proclaimed “playmaker’s mindset” that should make him an excellent addition to the Wolverine passing attack right away this fall.

Brady Hoke needs a solid season at Michigan in 2014 and will be calling on playmakers of every age to step up and make it happen. Freddy Canteen has the skills and the attitude to make an instant impact during his freshman season and will be a breakout star for the Wolverines this fall.
