It will be a rebuilding year of sorts for the Michigan Wolverines, but no matter the expectations, that doesn't take away from the fact that Michigan is one of the highest-profile programs in the nation and every game will be scrutinized by fans and foes alike. While this year's schedule isn't as difficult as previous years, there are several top games that both Michigan fans and college football fans in general can't afford to miss.

Ordinarily, this wouldn't even be a blip on the radar. Appalachian State is making its transition to the FBS, and its recent work in the FCS has been nothing to write home about. But no one will ever forget what happened the last time the Mocs walked into Michigan Stadium in 2007 and left with a 34-32 win in one of the most shocking upsets in college football history. Could it happen again?

Much of the intrigue in this game has less to do with the Michigan Wolverines and much more concerns the Penn State Nittany Lions, who visit Ann Arbor for the first time under the direction of new head coach James Franklin, recently of Vanderbilt. Franklin is trying to rebuild the football empire in Happy Valley, and while you can argue whether that's good or bad, this game in Week 7 will be key to UM in the Big 10 East.

It is perhaps a strange season when this isn't considered the No. 1 must-see game, but with Michigan still trying to return to national prominence and Ohio State having lost standout quarterback Braxton Miller for the season, there might not be much on the line when these teams meet to end the regular season. Ohio State has won nine of the last 10 in this rivalry, and UM hasn't won in Columbus since 2000.

In the last scheduled meeting of these longtime midwest rivals, the Wolverines and Notre Dame Fighting Irish meet in South Bend for their traditional early-season battle. This will be the second game for Michigan and first of the year against a standout opponent. The Fighting Irish would be a national title contender this year were it not for a very tough schedule. A road win here for UM would be big in establishing confidence early on.

This rivalry doesn't get the press that Michigan-Ohio State does, but much like that one, the tide has not been in the Wolverines' favor against Michigan State lately either. The Spartans have won five of the last six games between the teams after Michigan had won six in a row from 2002-07. Michigan hasn't won in East Lansing since 2007. It's another tough road test for the Wolverines that will define their season and can't be missed.
