The Alabama Crimson Tide have had quite the quarterback battle. We are just one day away from their first game of the season, and we are just now finding out who the starter will be.
The real quarterback battle will be won against the Mountaineers, though.
Sims will start, but Florida State transfer Jake Coker will see some playing time. Considering West Virginia isn’t entering this game with the best defense in college football, this will be the perfect time to see which quarterback can step up to the plate, complete passes and put points on the board.
Considering the quarterbacks have different styles — Coker is a more prototypical passer and Sims a read-option QB — both could be used in different plays all season long. However, who knows if head coach Nick Saban will go with that approach.
Regardless, it is time for one of the two to step up. If both QBs do well, Saban is certainly going to have a tough decision to make. As it stands, the situation couldn’t be much better.
Although West Virginia isn’t quite on the Crimson Tide’s level, it does provide a challenge. So, instead of playing a cupcake opponent in the first game, Alabama takes on a more worthy opponent. Translation: A good outing by either QB shouldn’t be considered a fluke, and should lead to that play becoming the starter.
Sims starts for now, but that could change in a hurry depending on how Alabama does against West Virginia.
