The Auburn Tigers are coming off a miraculous season, but it won't be easy to return to the national championship. There are many obstacles in the way, but head coach Gus Malzahn and the Tigers will make another solid run to get to the new College Football Playoff. Here are five reasons Auburn will make it to the playoff.

As the defending SEC champions, Auburn will have a major target on its back each week. The SEC has dominated college football recently, and coming out of such a competitive environment would certainly prepare the Tigers well for a championship run. If the Tigers are able to navigate their difficult SEC schedule and come out as champions, they should have no trouble finding a spot in the first ever College Football Playoff.

Auburn’s schedule is ranked in the Top 5 in terms of difficulty by various media outlets. Not only will the Tigers face a road schedule including trips to Georgia and Alabama, they play a Thursday night game in Manhattan, Kansas against Kansas State. Auburn could overcome a one-loss record with a schedule this tough. One thing is for sure, Auburn won’t be held out of the playoff because of an easy schedule.

After a few weeks last season, Auburn became devoted to the run, primarily because none of its opponents could stop it. Look for the Tigers’ ability to run the ball to stay the same, but do not expect any more seven-pass games. Nick Marshall returns with an offseason of work to improve his throwing, and the receiver group is very deep. Look for Auburn to throw a lot more this season.

Although the Tigers lost three starters to the first round of the NFL Draft, Auburn returns a solid group of veterans on offense, and the defensive unit has plenty of experience as well. These returning players almost won the national championship this year and certainly look to have improved in the offseason. The experience on the team can only be considered a strength.

Head coach Gus Malzahn has won at every level he has coached at. He is leading the way in terms of offensive strategy and is considered one of the most innovative coaches in the nation. Malzahn has made it to two national championships in four years with Auburn. Don’t expect that to change in the coming years. Malzahn will always have the Auburn Tigers contending.
