College Football Top 25 Rankings: Week 2

Texas A&M Football 2014
Jeff Blake-USA TODAY Sports

The first week of the 2014 college football season didn’t see any major upsets, but it still provided plenty of entertainment to say the least. It’s only one week into the season, but it looks like Texas A&M will be just fine at QB, Florida State may struggle early on and Ohio State is going to miss Braxton Miller.

Well, on to the top 25 rankings for Week 2.

Dropped out of the Rankings: UCF

As expected, Kansas State didn’t have any problems knocking off Stephen F. Austin. The Wildcats will take on Iowa State next, but the real challenge will be against Auburn on Sept. 18.

24. Clemson Tigers (0-1)

Clemson lost its first game of the season, but in all fairness, it did take on the Georgia Bulldogs, who scored 21 points in the fourth quarter. Oh yeah, Todd Gurley happened as well. The Dawgs’ running back went off and could not be stopped. Unfortunately for Clemson, it plays one easy opponent before taking on the Florida State Seminoles.

23. South Carolina Gamecocks (0-1)

23. South Carolina Gamecocks (0-1)

I am sure South Carolina fans didn’t see that one coming. Johnny Manziel, I mean Kenny Hill, was amazing against the Gamecocks. He could not be stopped and South Carolina gave up 52 points as a result. Needless to say, the defense has to get better for Steve Spurrier’s team.

Last Week: 12

22. Oklahoma State Cowboys (0-1)

Oklahoma State football

22. Oklahoma State Cowboys (0-1)

Oklahoma State football
Matthew Emmons-USA TODAY Sports

The Cowboys get the benefit of the doubt for the simple fact that they had to play the defending national champs in the first game of the season. A loss is a loss, but Oklahoma State did only lose by six points.

Last Week: 18

21. Texas Tech Red Raiders (1-0)

Texas Tech remains in the top 25… for now. The Red Raiders escaped the contest with Central Arkansas with a 42-35 victory. They move up in the rankings because they won and teams in front of them lost. It’s as simple as that.

Last Week: 23

20. Ole Miss Rebels (1-0)

20. Ole Miss Rebels (1-0)

Paul Abell-USA TODAY Sports

Ole Miss definitely has some work to do, but scoring 28 points in the fourth quarter has to ease fans some. Boise State didn’t look as good as it has in the past, but a win against the Broncos in the first game of the season should be looked at as a good start.

Last Week: 25

19. Louisville Cardinals (1-0)

19. Louisville Cardinals (1-0)

Louisville football
David Manning-USA TODAY Sports

The Louisville Cardinals had plenty of storylines entering the season. QB Teddy Bridgewater was no longer on the team, head coach Charlie Strong moved on to Texas and Louisville was playing in a new conference. Well, it managed to prevail and got a solid victory over the Hurricanes in Week 1.

Last Week: 22

18. Notre Dame Fighting Irish (1-0)

Notre Dame Football

Notre Dame fans have to be happy with QB Everett Golson’s performance in the first game of the season. After all, he threw for 295 yards and accounted for five touchdowns. Michigan should provide a much tougher test than Rice, though.

Last Week: 19

17. Wisconsin Badgers (0-1)

Wisconsin football
Troy Taormina-USA TODAY Sports

For awhile there it looked like Wisconsin was going to win. Then the fourth quarter happened. The bad news is the Badgers gave up 15 points in the fourth. The good news? Well, LSU was likely the toughest opponent on the schedule and Wisconsin could realistically go undefeated the rest of the way.

Last Week: 14

16. Missouri Tigers (1-0)

The Missouri Tigers didn’t look like the best team in college football against South Dakota State, but they still managed to win by 20 points. The key word is win.

Last Week: 17

15. Georgia Bulldogs (1-0)

Georgia football

15. Georgia Bulldogs (1-0)

Once again, RB Todd Gurley was a beast against Clemson. The Bulldogs are coming off of a five-loss season. However, if Gurley can play like he did against the Tigers all season long, Georgia should have no problem finishing with a better record. With that said, the Dawgs get South Carolina next.

Last Week: 21

14. Arizona State Sun Devils (1-0)

As expected, Arizona State cruised to victory against Weber State. The Sun Devils have two more “tuneup” games before playing four ranked opponents in a row.

USC poured it on Fresno State as it won by the score of 52-13. QB Cody Kessler looked great (394 yards, four TDs), but Stanford will provide a much tougher test next game.

12. UCLA Bruins (1-0)

A 21-point second quarter was the difference in the contest between UCLA and Virginia. The Bruins were expected to win this one with ease, but that is why the games are played. Brett Hundley and Co. have to get better. It is really that simple.

Last Week: 11

11. Baylor Bears (1-0)

11. Baylor Bears (1-0)

Baylor football
Jerome Miron-USA TODAY Sports

Baylor blanked SMU in its first game of the season, 45-0. However, Heisman hopeful Bryce Petty took a shot to the back early on and wasn’t able to play in the second half. Hopefully Petty has a speedy recovery because the Bears absolutely need him on the field.

Last Week: 9

10. Stanford Cardinal (1-0)

10. Stanford Cardinal (1-0)

Like Baylor, Stanford won 45-0 in its first game of the year. With that in mind, the Cardinal will take on the USC Trojans next, which is a game that could come back to haunt the loser later on in the season.

Last Week: 8

9. Ohio State Buckeyes (1-0)

Ohio State football

9. Ohio State Buckeyes (1-0)

Ohio State football
Tommy Gilligan-USA TODAY Sports

The Ohio State Buckeyes got the victory and I am sure that is all head coach Urban Meyer cares about. As the season progresses, QB J.T. Barrett should get better and better, which will be crucial if the team plans on winning the Big 10.

Last Week: 7

8. LSU Tigers (1-0)

8. LSU Tigers (1-0)

For awhile there, LSU looked like it was not only going to lose the game, but have a disappointing season as well. That was until the Tigers turned it on in the second half, outscoring Wisconsin 15-0 in the fourth.

Last Week: 10

7. Texas A&M Aggies (1-0)

No other team in the country surprised us more than the Texas A&M Aggies. With Johnny Manziel no longer on the team, questions were surrounding the Aggies' offense entering the season. Well, all questions were answered in that department as QB Kenny Hill went off for 511 yards and three TDs. Oh yeah, Texas A&M also beat South Carolina by the score of 52-28.

No surprises here. Oklahoma cruised to victory against Louisiana Tech. I have a strong feeling that the Sooners will be cruising to victory a lot this season.

I have the same feeling about the Oregon Ducks. With that said, Oregon will take on Michigan State next. Both of these teams could realistically make the College Football Playoff this year, so you could say that game will be getting a lot of buzz.

West Virginia gave the Crimson Tide a run for their money. This Alabama team is definitely beatable, but like most teams, will only get better as the season progresses.

Arkansas looked like it was actually going to keep up with Auburn, but then the second half started. The Tigers had 24 points in the second half and held the Razorbacks to zero.

2. Michigan State Spartans (1-0)

The game against Jacksonville State was just a tuneup game for Michigan State. However, the showdown against Oregon will be played as if it were the national championship. The winner could move up to the No. 1 ranking in the country next week, but that remains to be seen.

Last Week: 2

All eyes were on Florida State in its contest against Oklahoma State. In the end, the Seminoles won by six points, but they looked vulnerable at times, and it didn’t help that Jameis Winston threw two interceptions. Still, it was a good win against a solid opponent for Florida State.
