College Football Top 25 Rankings: Week 5

Mississippi State Football
Derick E.Hingle-USA TODAY Sports

Well, that was an interesting Saturday. Florida, for a second, looked like it was good enough to knock off Alabama, but other teams apparently took note and did some upsetting of their own. This Saturday was all about the upsets.

Find out where your favorite team is ranked in the top 25 rankings for Week 5.

25. Missouri Tigers (3-1)

The Missouri Tigers were taken down by the Indiana Hoosiers, and no, I am not talking about basketball. That probably doesn’t settle well with the Tigers, especially with the rough stretch they have coming up (South Carolina, Georgia and Florida in back-to-back-to-back games).

24. Penn State Nittany Lions (4-0)

The Penn State Nittany Lions are back in the top 25. Sure, there were other worthy teams that could have made a case for the top 25, but Penn State has managed to beat every single team it has faced so far.

23. Nebraska Cornhuskers (4-0)

Another Big 10 team that cracked the top 25. In years past, a Miami-Nebraska matchup would have been must-watch TV. In the end, it was Nebraska that was able to come away with the W.

22. Oklahoma State Cowboys (2-1)

There’s not much to say about Oklahoma State. The Cowboys had the week off, but they will take on Texas Tech in their next contest.

Much like the Cowboys, the Ohio State Buckeyes had the week off. Next up will be Cincinnati.

20. BYU Cougars (4-0)

BYU has now beaten Texas and Virginia. Not a bad start to the season. Don’t look now, but the Cougars are 4-0, and have the talent to go undefeated.

19. Stanford Cardinal (2-1)

Yet another top 25 team that had the week off. The Cardinal will travel to Washington next. After that, they take on Notre Dame … on the road.

18. USC Trojans (2-1)

This bye week thing for the top 25 is getting a little old. USC will try to bounce back against Oregon State in its next contest. Although the Trojans will probably be looking more forward to the showdown with Arizona State, they cannot take the Beavers lightly.

17. South Carolina Gamecocks (3-1)

The South Carolina Gamecocks beat the Vanderbilt Commodores and that is really all that matters. The Gamecocks will take on Missouri next. The Tigers are also a much better team than Vandy, so hopefully South Carolina brings its A game.

16. LSU Tigers (3-1)

Until the fourth quarter, the LSU Tigers were encountering a good-old fashioned beatdown. Unfortunately, they still managed to lose against the team that is one spot ahead of them in this week’s rankings.

15. Mississippi State Bulldogs (4-0)

Way to go, Mississippi State. Beating LSU is no easy task. That is even more true when a team enters Death Valley. Whether if fans want to say this game was a fluke or not, the Bulldogs just entered the conversation for SEC title contenders. It will not get any easier for Mississippi State, though, as it plays Texas A&M and Auburn next.

14. Wisconsin Badgers (2-1)

Wisconsin just got done running the ball for 644 yards. Melvin Gordon had 253 of those yards by himself.

The Ole Miss Rebels will have one more tuneup game and then it is on. The Rebels will then play four top 10 teams (as of right now) in five games.

12. Georgia Bulldogs (2-1)

As expected, the Georgia Bulldogs showed no mercy against Troy, winning by the score of 66-0. Tennessee should provide a much tougher challenge next game.

11. UCLA Bruins (3-0)

Beating Arizona State at Arizona State on Sept. 25 would be huge. In no way will that be easy for the UCLA Bruins, though.

10. Michigan State Spartans (2-1)

The Michigan State Spartans didn’t take too kindly to their loss against Oregon. They managed to drop 73 points on Eastern Michigan … in football, not basketball.

Although the Sun Devils will be playing at home against the Bruins, QB Taylor Kelly will not play, according to ESPN.com. That hurts. Really Bad.

8. Notre Dame Fighting Irish (3-0)

Like so many other teams this week, Notre Dame did not play. Through three games, they certainly look like College Football Playoff contenders, so there is that.

7. Baylor Bears (3-0)

The Baylor Bears have blown out all three teams they have faced so far and that trend will more than likely continue against Iowa State on Sept. 27.

6. Texas A&M Aggies (4-0)

At this point, Texas A&M looks unstoppable. We will have to see if that is still the case once this team starts playing the top teams in the SEC.

5. Oklahoma Sooners (4-0)

The Oklahoma Sooners look destined to make the College Football Playoff. West Virginia may have not been the toughest competition in the world, but the Sooners still dropped 45 points on them.

4. Auburn Tigers (3-0)

It wasn’t the most dominating performance, but the Auburn Tigers still managed to beat a top 25 team on the road. Unfortunately for them, there are currently three teams that are better.

3. Oregon Ducks (4-0)

Well, that was scary. Oregon’s College Football Playoff hopes could have ended before they even took on the top teams in the Pac-12. However, the Ducks won, and they will gladly move on to the next round (game).

2. Alabama Crimson Tide (4-0)

For a while there, Florida looked like it had the talent to keep up with the Alabama Crimson Tide. However, Alabama showed why it is at the top of the SEC — until beaten — and Blake Sims had one heck of a game in the process (445 passing yards, four TDs).

1. Florida State Seminoles (3-0)

Did Florida State go through a lot this week? Sure. However, they managed to knock off a quality opponent without Jameis Winston.
