All other FBS head coaches should be taking notes when it comes to a player like Everett Golson of Notre Dame.
If you have someone with that kind of ability who has neglected the books enough to be kicked out of school for academics, please invite him back the next season. Golson is earning his Masters in football for the Fighting Irish and has shown no rust in leading his team to an unbeaten season so far. By welcoming back their Prodigal’s Son, the school is potentially setting itself up for a multi-million dollar payday in a BCS playoff game.
In a 31-15 win over Syracuse at East Rutherford, N.J., Golson threw for four touchdowns and completed 25-straight passes–one short of the NCAA single-game record–to lead the No. 8 Irish.
With each passing week, Golson is moving to the head of the Heisman Trophy class. He started slow against the Orange, completing only the first six of his 10 passes but then he completed the next 10 in a row, including a pair of touchdown passes. To be sure, he wasn’t perfect, throwing two interceptions and losing a couple of fumbles, but he was more than good enough.
Golson and the Irish know this is plenty of work to do before being invited to the four-team playoff—because Notre Dame is not a part of a Power 5 conference the Irish have to win out—but having a playmaker like Golson with the ball in his hands on almost every play is a good place to start. In 2013, Golson could not play football or take classes, because he was booted from Notre Dame for what the school termed an academic violation.
Most players would grow a few layers of rust, but Golson’s seamless return has to be the most pleasant surprise of the Notre Dame season.
