College Football Top 25 Rankings: Week 9

The Big 12 outlook will look much different after this weekend. Other than some Big 12 teams getting upset, not much happened in college football this week. Oh yeah, I guess Notre Dame and Florida State played each other as well, so that was kind of a big deal.

With those two powerhouses battling it out, and more ranked teams going down, you better believe the top 25 will look different this week.

Don't look now, but the LSU Tigers have won two games in a row. They would need a miracle to make the SEC title game, but they just have to worry about themselves at this point. Regardless, LSU will finish out the season by playing Ole Miss, Alabama, Arkansas and Texas A&M.

24. Duke Blue Devils (6-1)

The Duke Blue Devils haven't had the toughest schedule we have ever seen, but a 6-1 record is still pretty solid in the ACC. I doubt this team will win the conference title, but making it could at least be in store for the Blue Devils.

23. West Virginia Mountaineers (5-2)

Two losses already on the season or not, the West Virginia Mountaineers got a huge win over the Baylor Bears this week. They are also in the thick of the Big 12 title race in the middle of October. Not bad, West Virginia. Not bad.

22. Utah Utes (5-1)

The Utah Utes didn't knock off a top five team or anything like that, but they did just enough to crack the top 25 this week. Utah may only have one loss on the season, but it will take on five ranked opponents in a row. Things could get really bad or really good for the Utes really fast.

21. Marshall Thundering Herd (7-0)

The Marshall Thundering Herd are undefeated, and that very well could stay the case for the rest of 2014. If so, hopefully the CFP committee does the right thing by putting them in the playoff. Wishful thinking?

Well, Cody Kessler and the rest of the Trojans seemed to have fun on Saturday. Kessler threw seven TDs and the team beat the Colorado Buffaloes by the score of 56-28.

It wasn't the most dominating performance, but the Clemson Tigers still got a W on Saturday. Sometimes, that is all that matters.

There's probably no way that Nebraska will make the playoff this season, but it still has a chance to win the Big 10.

The East Carolina Pirates have now won four games in a row. That South Carolina loss doesn't look as good as it once did, but it was a road loss nonetheless.

What is up with the Oklahoma Sooners? I understand Kansas State is a good team, but Oklahoma has now lost two of three. An absolute miracle is needed for this team to make the playoff.

15. Arizona Wildcats (5-1)

Arizona got the week off, which isn't the worst thing that could have happened. After all, the Wildcats did lose against USC last week.

The Arizona State Sun Devils have gone under-the-radar despite the fact that they went 2-1 during their stretch against UCLA, USC and Stanford.

Kansas State got by far its biggest win of the season this week. Is it possible for the Wildcats to win the Big 12? At this rate, I don't see why not.

The Ohio State Buckeyes have been absolutely dominating teams since their loss against Virginia Tech. Unfortunately, that loss, combined with a down Big 10, could result in this team missing out on the playoff.

Although the Big 10 is down, Michigan State still has a decent chance of making the CFP. Its biggest test left of 2014 will be a date with Ohio State.

10. Baylor Bears (6-1)

Yet another top 10 team that went down this season. Baylor may have an incredible offense, but the defense is a serious cause for concern.

9. Notre Dame Fighting Irish (6-1)

The Notre Dame Fighting Irish are coming off of a heartbreaking loss. However, people will definitely take note of the fact that they only lost to Florida State by four points on the road. One loss or not, Notre Dame is proving to be a top team.

8. TCU Horned Frogs (5-1)

TCU is the best team in the Big 12. They are very good on both sides of the ball, which is scary for the rest of the country. Oh yeah, the Horned Frogs are also coming off a 42-9 victory over Oklahoma State.

7. Oregon Ducks (6-1)

Oregon has now scored 42 or more points in back-to-back games. Needless to say, the offense looks good, and so do the Ducks.

6. Auburn Tigers (5-1)

That victory against Kansas State is looking better and better. Auburn's playoff hopes are still very much alive. That schedule is still looking brutal, though.

5. Georgia Bulldogs (6-1)

Nick Chubb filled in very nicely for Todd Gurley once again — rushed for 202 yards against Arkansas. This is by far the most dangerous team in the SEC East.

4. Alabama Crimson Tide (6-1)

Well, that wasn't pretty. If you are a Texas A&M fan, that is. Alabama just got done beating the Aggies by the score of 59-0. I think the Crimson Tide are going to be just fine.

3. Ole Miss Rebels (7-0)

Ole Miss cruised to victory against Tennessee by the score of 34-3. The anticipation for the Egg Bowl is killing me.

A loss to Notre Dame would have doomed the Florida State Seminoles. That was not the case, and the team is now in prime position to make the College Football Playoff, if it doesn't slip up somewhere.

FSU could definitely make a case for the No. 1 spot after beating the Fighting Irish, but people have to remember that Mississippi State has beaten three top 10 teams. Not to mention, they look unstoppable out on the football field.
