Todd Gurley’s Possible Return Won’t Daunt Nick Chubb’s Playing Opportunities

Nick Chubb Todd Gurley Georgia Bulldogs Football Fans Signs

On Wednesday, the University of Georgia filed an official reinstatement from the NCAA to allow Todd Gurley to play on the Bulldog team after he was suspended for autographing memorabilia to be sold. The University has handled Gurley’s conduct discreetly and with dignity, which should play into his favor on returning to the field before Georgia’s game against Florida next weekend. That being said, if Gurley does return to his starting position by the next game, what does that mean for Nick Chubb?

As evidenced by the Bulldogs’ last two resounding victories, those who were concerned that the team would be lackluster without the help of Gurley were very wrong. In two games, Chubb has ran for 345 yards and three touchdowns. Obviously, Gurley returning will take a huge chunk out of his playing time. But quarterback Hutson Mason now knows that he has the same amount of chemistry with Chubb as he does with Gurley. Whether Mark Richt and Mike Bobo decide to use Gurley or Chubb for certain plays and stretches of time, Mason has peace of mind that whoever he passes the ball to will take care of it.

With that in mind, Richt and Bobo will probably use both players more equally than before. Gurley will be able to get back on the field and play hard, but can enjoy more breaks and rest easy that Chubb will help take care of the Georgia offense. Whether it’s switching off every couple of plays, downs or possessions, both players are more likely to stay healthy by sharing running back responsibilities. Chubb has certainly proven his worth and the Georgia fans, players and coaches are truly grateful for him being a source of hope and strength during the Gurley debacle.

With both of these players on the field, the Bulldogs have a solid chance of winning the SEC Championship and earning a berth in the College Football Playoff.
