As the Fighting Irish head into their bye week at a record of 6-1, it's time to take a look at which players have played the best football for the team through seven games. Notre Dame has several worthy candidates for the top-five slots, but there are a specific few who have provided the biggest impact to the No. 7 rated team nationally, according to the AP poll.

The 315-pound defensive lineman has given the Fighting Irish defense a surprising lift throughout the season. Originally a scout team player, Jones has proven that he has the ability to get into the opposing team’s backfield and rush the passer consistently. He ranks second on the team in quarterback hurries with seven and third in tackles for loss with five.

Schmidt, a former walk-on, has now turned into one of the main leaders of the Notre Dame defense. The senior linebacker has been a great story this season, recording a total of 57 tackles, two interceptions and two forced fumbles. His work ethic and drive to obtain a starting spot for the Fighting Irish throughout his time at the university has not gone unnoticed among teammates.

The 2014 Lott Impact Trophy quarterfinalist has been a consistent force on the defensive side of the ball. Smith, a sophomore linebacker, has accumulated a total of 53 tackles, 6.5 tackles for loss and two sacks. The Fighting Irish have relied on Smith all year to solidify the defense and will continue to need great performances from him the rest of the season.

2. Will Fuller

After expected No. 1 receiver DaVaris Daniels was suspended due to an academic issue prior to the season, the Fighting Irish were unsure which receiver would step up to fill the role. Fuller has proven to be an increasingly reliable replacement. The sophomore receiver has been a go-to target for Golson all season and for good reason. He’s hauled in 43 receptions for 583 yards and eight touchdowns so far.

He remains a dark horse candidate for the Heisman Trophy.
