TCU’s Trevone Boykin Forces Way into Heisman Trophy Race

On Saturday afternoon, the TCU Horned Frogs proved why they’re a team worth taking seriously, absolutely embarrassing in-state rival Texas Tech to the tune of an 82-27 slaughter. The driving force behind TCU’s big win was quarterback Trevone Boykin, who asserted himself as a serious Heisman Trophy candidate.

During the Frogs’ route of the Red Raiders, Boykin compiled 433 yards, seven touchdowns and no interceptions on 22 of 39 passing, while also adding 28 yards on the ground. While Texas Tech’s putrid defense obviously played an important role in Boykin’s big numbers, the redshirt junior certainly displayed the talent needed to woo Heisman voters.

On the season, Boykin has amassed 2,306 passing yards, 20 touchdowns, only three interceptions and a 139.1 passer rating, while also proving capable of moving the chains with his feet. More than anything, he’s been an outstanding leader for the TCU offense and has played a pivotal role in the Frogs’ ascension to the top of the Big 12.

Throughout his career at TCU, Boykin has shown glimpses of greatness and NFL potential. With the Frogs sitting at 6-1 and looking like legitimate contenders for the Big 12 crown, though, pro scouts are taking notice and so should Heisman voters.

If Boykin can keep pace and continue to help TCU crush opponents, there’s a good chance he’ll be headed to New York at the end of the season. For now, though, he’ll be celebrated for breaking the school record for passing touchdowns in a game.

If you haven’t heard of Boykin yet, it’s time to familiarize yourself. Either way, you’ll be hearing his name a lot more as the college football season winds down.
