In gambling, it isn’t wise to rely on past experiences to predict future results. But with Urban Meyer — this isn’t gambling — it’s a sure thing.

Meyer wins wherever he goes and with whatever he has. He cut his teeth going 17-6 at Bowling Green. He built a program with a 22-2 record at Utah. He revitalized a powerhouse at Florida (65-15), and is now on a 32-3 run with Ohio State.

The latter is pretty impressive considering Meyer lost standout Senior QB Braxton Miller just before the start of this season. The Buckeyes had to shuffle, and Meyer had to go with untested freshman J.T. Barrett with little time to prepare. Then in Week 2, a resume spoiling loss to Virginia Tech had football talking heads decrying the death of not only Ohio State, but also the Big Ten Conference.

The rapid media reaction to this loss would appear to have urged Ohio State’s season to crumble. Far from it. In the following seven games, Ohio State’s only scare came on the road to Penn State, where they escaped by a seven-point margin.

The games in the interim from Virginia Tech to Michigan State were a bit soft, but each and every one of them helped Barrett grow and become the comfortably dominant quarterback we witnessed Saturday night. He made decisions and executed throws that made us wish the Heisman Trophy system also had a reset button.

Given another Auburn loss, Notre Dame fading away and a shaky Alabama facing a gruesome remaining schedule, the Buckeyes can post their convincing quality win against the Spartans on the committee door. Hoping that the “powers that be” evaluate Ohio State on who the Buckeyes are, and not what the Buckeyes were.

Win out this time, Mr. Meyer, and you’re in the playoffs.
