The Michigan State Spartans are completely out of the hunt for the College Football Playoff, but still in the hunt for the Big Ten title. MSU needs Ohio State to lose their next two games, but the Spartans have a very easy remaining schedule and should finish strong. Michigan State’s absence from the playoffs will be a disappointment, but it should get back its talented quarterback Connor Cook for next season.

Its next opponents, the Rutgers Scarlet Knights, boast a team that is average all across the board. The Scarlet Knights already are bowl-eligible, so Rutgers isn’t coming into the game in a do-or-die scenario. Rutgers should finish the season strong, but isn’t talented enough to keep it close with the Spartans.

I think Michigan State will dominate from the opening kick. The Spartans limited Maryland to six total rushing yards last week, and though the Terrapins are not a rushing team, only six rushing yards is still incredible. Rutgers, which has a fairly balanced offense, will be unable to run their offense and the Spartans will benefit from breaking its rhythm.

On offense, Michigan State should be fairly balanced. Rutgers has looked like a different program when facing top Big Ten opposition, and has zero wins against opponents in the top three of the conference. All three elite Big Ten programs that Rutgers has faced so far this season put up at least 37 points on the Scarlet Knights, so you can expect the Spartans to do the same.

Prediction: Michigan State 38, Rutgers 13
