Florida State’s Streak At 28 Consecutive Games With Win vs. Florida

The No. 2 Florida State Seminoles pulled off another victory in the battle for the state of Florida against the Florida Gators 24-19. Another close win to add to the impressive streak for the Seminoles, that now stands at 28 consecutive games. This was all despite a dismal performance from quarterback Jameis Winston, who threw for 124 yards, two touchdowns and four interceptions.

The story of the past four weeks for the Seminoles has been a difficult road for Winston by getting down early in games but managing late comeback drives to add another victory. Florida came into the game with a 6-4 record and was not considered major opponent for the Seminoles, even though the Gators kept the game competitive like the classic matchups from the 1990′s.

Florida State now has five wins this season when turning the ball over at least three times, and leads the FBS in that category. All of Winston’s interceptions came in the first quarter of the game, but the Gators weren’t able to capitalize with touchdowns and had to settle for field goals. The defending Heisman winner has set the bar a bit lower this year — being the only quarterback in the FBS to throw three picks in the first quarter of a game, has an interception in last six consecutive game (the longest active streak in the ACC), and is the only FBS quarterback this season to throw four interceptions in a winning effort.

There’s too much at steak for Winston and Florida State to lose if they don’t improve quickly. The No. 16 Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets will meet the Seminoles in the ACC championship, coming off of a 30-24 OT win against the No. 9 Georgia Bulldogs. The yellow jackets are a much better opponent with a 10-2 record along with being 2-0 against ranked teams.

Florida State has not lost a game with Winston under center, going a perfect 24-0, including a national championship win last season. The Seminoles hope the undefeated streak can continue past the conference championship and into the first four-team college football playoff.
