For the past 16 seasons, the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) football team has competed at the FBS level as part of Conference USA. Based on comments from head coach Bill Clark, that could end as early as this upcoming week.

According to Clark, the school is on the verge of shutting down the football program.

“I think it’s going to happen,” said Clark. “Unless something changes before the weekend ends, I think it’s over. I think the odds are very high it ends this week. To shut the doors? That’s sad.”

This is while coming off one of UAB’s most successful (and surprising) seasons since making the transition to FBS in 1999. It’ll be their first season at or above .500 since 2004, when they went to the Hawaii Bowl.

A bowl game, however, is far from assured considering they’re on the tail end of teams with the minimum of six wins. If they aren’t invited to play in a bowl game, there’s a good chance the Blazers football team has played its last game.

UAB Athletic Director Brian Mackin is also in the process of putting together a separation agreement with the school.

The school has long struggled to find proper funding for the football program, with yearly underwhelming results (72-116 since 1999) certainly not helping their cause. Even with offers of help beginning to leak in as word of the program’s demise spreads, chances are the Blazers will not be fielding a football team in 2015.

For football’s sake, we hope a resolution will be found. We’re not getting our hopes up, though.
