NCAA Football Florida State Seminoles

Florida State Falling To No. 4 In College Football Rankings Won’t Matter

Florida State

The latest College Football Playoff Rankings were released on Tuesday night, and somehow the undefeated and reigning national champion Florida State Seminoles fell yet again to No. 4. The Seminoles began the season ranked first in the AP poll, but the playoff committee has not viewed them in a favorable light and this week FSU was leapfrogged (pun intended) by the 10-1 TCU Horned Frogs.

First off, the committee got this horrendously wrong. How an undefeated FSU is ranked only fourth is mind boggling, as is the fact that the Baylor Bears (10-1), which beat TCU, are ranked sixth while TCU is ranked third. The Big 12 does not have a conference championship, so college football fans will have to wait and see how each team does in their regular season finales; but if both teams come away with wins, what will the committee do then?

Secondly, if you’re an FSU fan and you’re upset this morning, calm down. It doesn’t really matter that the committee members are obviously insane. True, the Seminoles have not looked as dominant as they did last season, but if they beat Georgia Tech (ranked No. 11) this Saturday and thus win their second straight ACC Championship and complete a second consecutive undefeated season, they will be in the top four and take part in the playoff.

That’s even assuming that Alabama (ranked first), Oregon (ranked second) and the aforementioned Horned Frogs all win this weekend. TCU does have a really favorable matchup against Iowa State, but Alabama has to play Missouri (ranked No. 16) in the SEC Championship, and Oregon has to face Arizona (ranked No. 7) in the Pac 12 Championship — a team the Ducks lost to at home earlier this season and at Arizona last season.

It’s certainly not a given that all three of those teams win on Saturday. The Ohio State Buckeyes are currently the No. 5 team in the playoff rankings, and if they beat Wisconsin (ranked 13th) this Saturday and thus win the Big Ten, then they should be in the top four; but they should take TCU’s spot, not Florida State’s.

Florida State should be ranked higher than fourth, but if they win this weekend, the Seminoles should automatically be in the playoff. It should be that simple, and if it’s not, maybe a new committee/system is needed.
