The Florida State Seminoles‘ defense has withstood every jab, rabbit punch and body blow the ACC and the Florida Gators have energetically offered, and now they face arguably their most physical challenger in the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets.

Last week against Florida, Dalvin Cook was the only nice thing in an ugly game, gaining 144 yards on the ground by way of 24 carries. In this long season, the young freshman Cook appears to be the only Seminole still with firepower. It may have taken 12 games for Cook to emerge as the feature back, but in this one upcoming game it’s apparent he is Florida State’s only hope for title retention.

The ACC title game is going to come down to mitigating the other team’s strengths. Florida State’s M.O. has been finishing games strong and taking advantage of late opportunities to keep their undefeated record afloat. Outside of a late fumble last week against the Georgia Bulldogs, the Yellow Jackets rarely afford opponents said opportunities and frequently hoard time of possession. This is a big problem for FSU.

With a tired Seminoles’ defense and Georgia Tech’s ability to hold the ball for eons, Cook will need to bring his best to the Yellow Jackets. FSU will have to feed the freshman 30 times, and Cook will need to take it upon himself to get additional first downs and add to FSU’s time of possession. This will take away Georgia Tech’s skeleton key to the game.

In order for Florida State to get a few weeks of rest and shine like new in the College Football Playoff, Cook will need to rise up and give the Seminoles’ defense a few minutes of rest in the ACC Championship.
