After a slate of not-so-competitive conference championship games, the College Football Playoffs selection committee may have actually been able to get some sleep on Saturday night. Based on the last set of rankings, it was almost a guarantee that Florida State, Alabama and Oregon would earn a spot in the the first ever NCAAF playoff.

But what about the fourth and final team?

With at least three teams legitimately in the running for the final spot, two programs were set to be sorely disappointed on Sunday morning. But with all the speculation pushed aside, here’s how things shook out in the final College Football Playoffs ranking of 2014:

1. Alabama

2. Oregon

3. Florida State

4. Ohio State

5. Baylor

6. TCU

In a surprising, but not so surprising twist, the committee moved OSU up into the final spot after its beatdown of Wisconsin. This means the Buckeyes will take on Alabama, and that Florida State will take on Oregon in the semi-finals. Talk about marquee matchups.

Did Ohio State’s history/popularity play a role in their final ranking? You have to think maybe, because OSU vs. Alabama is about as big as it gets in terms of drawing power (not that the committee would ever consider ratings as part of the equation).

As for Baylor and TCU, you have to wonder if things would have been different if the Big 12 had a conference championship game.
