Michigan State vs. Baylor: Predicting The Final Score Of The Cotton Bowl

If you believe that the Baylor Bears are one of the best four teams in the country, then you’ll also have to admire the Michigan State Spartans‘ “body of work.”

Sorry for that superfluous jab, Baylor fans, but by the Cotton Bowl’s end, Michigan State will have played the Oregon Ducks, Ohio State Buckeyes and your highly-ranked Baylor. Whether you agree with the final rankings or not, playing the No. 2, No. 4, and No. 5 teams in one season is quite un-Big 10-like.

Now for a shot at Spartans fans: If they aren’t leading by the Cotton Bowl’s end, then they’ll have lost to all three of these college football heavyweights. Although they’ve taken on some of the best, it’s a little embarrassing how they’ve been throttled by them.

Yet, Baylor did lose to the West Virginia Mountaineers — by two touchdowns. However, Baylor does have the fifth-best passing attack in the country, and this is what will give MSU migraines. In the Spartans’ two losses, it was predominately the secondary that let them down. Seam routes, crossing routes, deep balls — they all found vacant turf and burned the Spartans in their sound defeats to Ohio State and Oregon.

A healthy Bryce Petty is a fantastic weapon for Baylor, and if this game were played next week, I’d pick Baylor by 10. But Mark Dantonio and Pat Narduzzi have 24 days to prepare for Baylor’s aerial advantage, turf or no, and I can’t think of any better tandem that can figure out how to stop them.

MSU came into last year’s Rose Bowl an underdog, and came out with a good win against the Stanford Cardinal. MSU will come into the 2015 Cotton Bowl as an underdog, and will come out with a 3-point win over the Baylor Bears.

Prediction:  Michigan State 27, Baylor 24
