Florida State’s Jimbo Fisher Should Win Coach of the Year

Jimbo Fisher Coach of the Year

Undefeated. The word itself should stand alone, much like the Florida State Seminoles did this year by being the only team to go through the entire regular season undefeated.

The Seminoles sit with a 13-0 record, winning the ACC Atlantic Division and beating out ACC Coastal Division champions Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets 37-35 in the ACC Championship Game. Florida State now heads to the Rose Bowl to face off against the Oregon Ducks in the first round of the new College Football Playoff. The main reason the Seminoles find themselves in this position is Jimbo Fisher.

Fisher is now in his fifth year as the team’s coach, and he boasts an impressive 58-10 overall record. His first couple of years were shaky, with the team earning 10-4 and 9-4 records in 2010 and 2011 respectively, but since his first season as Seminoles coach, Fisher has never lost a bowl game.

The Chick-Fil-A Bowl (2010), Champs Sports Bowl (2011), Orange Bowl (2012) and the BCS National Championship Game in 2013 are securely on his resume as a head coach for the Seminoles, and in all but one of his seasons, when the team finished tied for second, the Seminoles have won the ACC Atlantic Division.

Five years, four division titles, three conference titles, one BCS championship title and his team in place to make a charge at the national title once again. Many will say the victories were by a close margin, but they are still victories and Fisher knows how to win.

The comeback  win over Notre Dame exemplified Fisher’s winning mentality and how this mentality plays out on the field. If Fisher leads his team past Oregon and into the National Championship game, there’s no question who should be Coach of the Year.
