It was yet another disappointing season for the Iowa Hawkeyes in 2014. It lost to chief rival Iowa state for the fifth time in the last ten years and was routed by Tennessee in the TaxSlayer Bowl. It no doubt left fans looking forward to 2015. Here is a list of plays that made Hawkeye fans’ lives a little easier last season.

Iowa jumped out to an early 14-0 lead against Indiana in Kinnick Stadium. It only got worse for the Hoosiers as quarterback Jake Rudock found wide receiver Damond Powell for a 72-yard touchdown strike to bust the game wide open en route to a 45-29 thumping of Indiana.

Iowa was in a low-scoring battle with Iowa State in mid-September last season. After blowing a 14-3 lead, the Hawkeyes needed a field goal to pull even with the Cyclones. Kicker Marshall Koehn delivered with a 44-yard field goal to knot the score at 17 with 4:08 to play. Unfortunately, the Cyclones kicked the game-winning field goal with two seconds left to ice the game.

Iowa had already rolled up 17 points on Northwestern in the first quarter, but for Ben Niemann, it wasn’t enough. Niemann blocked a Chris Gradone punt and recovered it in the end zone to put Iowa up 24-0 with three quarters left to play. The Hawkeyes dismantled Northwestern 48-7.

Iowa drew first blood against Indiana late in the first quarter when Rudock found tight end Jake Duzey for a nine-yard score. Defensive back Desmond King snuffed out any hope of a response from the Hoosiers when he intercepted Indiana quarterback Nate Sudfeld and returned it 35 yards for a touchdown. This was part of a 28-point first quarter for the Hawkeyes.

Iowa fell behind Wisconsin early but pulled to within two points early in the fourth quarter. However, Badger running back Melvin Gordon scored to put Wisconsin up 26-17 with under eight minutes to play. But on Iowa’s ensuing possession, Rudock found Duzey on a nine-yard touchdown pass with five minutes remaining to make the score 26-24. Unfortunately for Iowa, that would be the final score.

The Hawkeyes led Nebraska 24-7 midway through the third quarter, but gave up the go-ahead touchdown early in the fourth quarter when Husker wide receiver De’Mornay Pierson-El returned a punt 80 yards for six. Trailing 28-24, Rudock hit running back Jordan Canzeri for a five-yard touchdown pass to reclaim the lead with less than two minutes to play. However, Nebraska kicked the game-tying field goal as time expired, and eventually won in overtime.

The Hawkeyes spotted the Boilermakers ten points before taking control of the game. Tied at ten late in the third quarter, wide receiver Kevonte Martin-Manley hauled in a 23-yard pass from quarterback C.J. Beathard to put Iowa up for good. The Hawkeyes scored 24 unanswered points to defeat Purdue 24-10.

Northern Iowa had Hawkeye Nation restless for about 53 minutes on the opening day of the 2014 season. Midway through the fourth quarter, Iowa was clinging to a one-point lead over the Panthers. A collective exhale could no doubt be felt when Rudock connected with Powell for 12 yards for the game-clinching touchdown.

The Pitt Panthers led Iowa for most of the game, but the Hawkeyes claimed the lead when it mattered. Trailing 20-17 midway through the fourth quarter, running back Mark Weisman plunged into the endzone from one yard out to claim the lead and the win for Iowa, 24-20.

Ball State had this borderline unwatchable game all but won. The Cardinals took a 13-3 lead into the fourth quarter, and held it until the last three minutes of the game. Iowa ripped off two touchdowns in the final 2:52, the game-winning one coming from a 12-yard pass from Rudock to Duzey with one minute to play. Iowa 17, Ball State 13.
