Indiana had a lackluster 2014, despite having one of the best running backs in the country in Tevin Coleman. The Hoosiers managed a 4-8 season, but did end on a high note defeating in-state rival Purdue. Despite the less than impressive record, the Hoosiers put together quite a few big plays last season, and here they are.

Indiana welcomed in-state FCS opponent Indiana State to open the 2014 season. The Hoosiers led 7-3 late in the first quarter when Coleman took a Nate Sudfeld handoff and broke free down the middle of the field 73 yards to give the Hoosiers a 14-3 lead. Indiana defeated Indiana State 28-10.

North Texas was Indiana’s last non-conference opponent in 2014. The Hoosiers wasted no time in dispatching the Mean Green. Indiana led 14-0 late in the first quarter when Sudfeld hit wide receiver Shane Wynn for a 45-yard score to extend the lead to 21-0.

The Mean Green responded to Wynn’s touchdown with a 20-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Dajon Williams to receiver Carlos Harris. But the Hoosiers didn’t take their foot off the gas. On Indiana’s first possession of the second half, running back D’Angelo Roberts outran the North Texas defense 47 yards to stretch the lead to 21 again. The Hoosiers ended their non-conference schedule with a 49-24 victory.

Rutgers held a slim 10-6 lead against Indiana in Piscataway just before the half. The Hoosiers needed something to hang their hats on going into the locker room. Coleman delivered in familiar fashion with a 67-yard touchdown run with 18 seconds left in the quarter, giving Indiana a 13-10 halftime lead. But Rutgers would rally down the stretch, and Indiana left Piscataway with a 45-23 loss.

Michigan State took an early 14-3 lead in Memorial Stadium, but the Hoosiers didn’t roll over right away. Early in the second quarter, Wynn took an end around pitch and made several Spartan defenders miss on his 75-yard run to the end zone. This narrowed the deficit to 14-10. The Hoosiers would score again to take the lead, but Michigan State followed with a scoring onslaught in their 56-17 trouncing of the Hoosiers.

After a scoreless first quarter, both teams were grasping for just a little momentum before halftime. The Hoosiers got ahold of it first after safety Mark Murphy (right) intercepted Penn State quarterback Christian Hackenberg and returned it 47 yards for a touchdown. Indiana would not score again in the 13-7 loss.

Indiana had only mustered a pair of Griffin Oakes field goals through the first three-and-a-half quarters against chief rival Purdue, but that changed as the third quarter drew to a close. Purdue led 13-6 when Wynn took an end around pitch from Coleman and ran 41 yards to the end zone almost untouched, tying the score at 13. This set up a dramatic fourth-quarter finish in Memorial Stadium.

The Buckeyes took an early 14-0 lead against the Hoosiers, but were plagued by turnovers afterward. Indiana only trailed by one heading into halftime. Midway through the third quarter, Ohio State downed a punt at the ten yard line. Coleman broke through the left side of the line on the next play and outran the Ohio State secondary 90 yards to give Indiana a 20-14 lead. Indiana would score only one more time in the 42-27 loss in Columbus.

Indiana hung with Missouri for most of the game, and delivered the knockout punch when it absolutely needed it. Missouri kicked a field goal with a little over two minutes to play to take a 27-24 lead. Indiana responded with a six-play 75-yard drive finished off by a three-yard touchdown run by Roberts to give the Hoosiers a 31-27 victory, thus stunning the Faurot Field crowd, the SEC and the rest of the country.

Both teams traded field goals in the fourth quarter and were deadlocked at 16 with time winding down. Indiana had one last gasp with less than a minute to play. Freshman quarterback Zander Diamont kept the ball on a zone read and leaped into the end zone from one yard out to give Indiana a 23-16 lead with less than 30 seconds to play. This would be the final score as the Hoosiers ended an otherwise disappointing season in victorious fashion.
