The Florida State Seminoles have endured plenty of negative press in the last two years thanks to the off-field issues of quarterback Jameis Winston. True freshman quarterback De’Andre Johnson appears to be headed down a similar path after getting charged with misdemeanor battery stemming from an incident at a Tallahassee bar on June 24. If there is anything to these allegations, FSU should strongly considering cutting ties with Johnson to put some distance between the Seminole quarterback position and poor decision making.

According to sources, Johnson got into an argument with a woman at the bar after she cut in front of him while they were waiting to order drinks. Police say that witnesses saw the woman raise her arms before Johnson grabbed them and then punched her in the face. Head coach Jimbo Fisher indefinitely suspended Johnson from the team following the incident and state attorney Willie Meggs decided to press charges after reviewing security footage from the bar.

Johnson is a talented prospect, without question, after committing to FSU as a four-star recruit and the No. 7 dual-threat QB in the 2015 class. The Jacksonville-native enrolled at Florida State in January after graduating high school early so that he could participate in spring practice and jumpstart the learning process. He wasn’t projected to play in 2015 after finishing behind Sean Maguire coming out of the spring and then watching the team add former Notre Dame Fighting Irish quarterback Everett Golson as a graduate transfer. As a result, Johnson was likely to get redshirted in 2015, but now his future with the program could be in doubt.

The biggest thing working against leniency for Johnson in this case might be the headaches that Winston gave the program off the field. From the sexual assault investigation that lasted basically his entire collegiate career, to the shoplifting incident, to the one-game suspension he served for yelling obscenities in the middle of campus, Winston was in the news nearly as often for being in trouble as he was for winning a Heisman Trophy and leading the Seminoles to a national title. As good as he was in the huddle, he was a distraction off the field that caused serious headaches for Fisher and the university.

Because of that, you can imagine that FSU’s patience would be worn thin at this point when it comes to players getting into trouble, especially players who play a high-profile position like quarterback. Florida State has enough talent at quarterback with Maguire and Golson this season and another incoming freshman, Deondre Francois (the No. 3 rated dual-threat quarterback in the 2015 recruiting class), set to take the reins in the near future. They don’t need Johnson necessarily so they might be less inclined to endure any off-field issues from him, no matter his potential.

After the issues that the team endured with Jameis Winston, there will likely be a lot less leeway granted to De’Andre Johnson if there is any validity to the charges against him. If his off-field issues continue, how much longer will he be a member of the Seminole roster?
